Florinef / Fludrocortisone (generic name: fludrocortisone) is a synthetic corticosteroid primarily used to treat conditions where the body does not produce sufficient natural steroids. It is commonly prescribed for Addison’s disease, a disorder where the adrenal glands fail to produce adequate hormones, and for salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome (also known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia), a congenital condition leading to hormone imbalances. Fludrocortisone functions by mimicking the effects of aldosterone, a natural hormone that helps maintain blood pressure and balance sodium and potassium levels in the body. Its action by promoting sodium retention and potassium excretion aids in regulating fluid balance and blood pressure. As a mineralocorticoid, fludrocortisone plays a crucial role in managing conditions associated with adrenal insufficiency.

Dosage

It is essential to follow the prescribing physician’s instructions carefully. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if there are any questions. The typical dosage of Florinef varies based on the condition being treated and individual patient needs. For adults with Addison’s disease, the usual dose ranges from 0.05 mg to 0.1 mg taken once daily. In cases of salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome, the dosage may be adjusted according to the patient’s response and laboratory results.  Don’t stop taking this medicine without talking to a doctor – it may be advisable to reduce the dose gradually If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is less than six hours before the next scheduled dose. In such a case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double-dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage

Store the tablets in their original container in a refrigerator between 2°-8°C (36°-46°F). If refrigeration is not possible, they may be stored at room temperature (up to 25°C / 77°F) for not more than 30 days. Do not return tablets to the refrigerator once they have been stored at room temperature. Keep the bottle tightly closed to protect from moisture. If in any doubt, consult our blog on safe medicine management.

Most people who use Florinef do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Some of the side effects that have been reported include increased blood pressure, swelling due to fluid retention, and low potassium levels.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Florinef is FDA-approved for treating Addison’s disease, where the adrenal glands produce insufficient hormones, leading to symptoms like fatigue, muscle weakness, and low blood pressure.

Fludrocortisone is also used for salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting steroid hormone production, resulting in dehydration, low sodium levels, and high potassium levels. By supplementing the body’s mineralocorticoid levels, Fludrocortisone helps manage these conditions effectively.

  • Can Florinef cause high blood pressure?
Yes, Florinef can cause increased blood pressure due to its sodium-retaining properties. Regular monitoring is recommended.
  • Can I take Florinef with other medications?
The prescrrbing doctor should be aware of all medications you're taking. As well, Florinef can interact with over-the-counter drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain antifungals, so it's important to consult with the doctor before starting any new medicines, or changing from previous medications.
  • Is long-term use of Florinef safe?
Long-term use (three months or longer) requires regular medical supervision due to potential risks like osteoporosis and immune suppression.
  • How does fludrocortisone work?
Fludrocortisone works by mimicking aldosterone, a natural hormone that regulates sodium and potassium levels, ensuring proper fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Can Florinef treat conditions other than adrenal insufficiency?
Under a doctor’s supervision,Florinef may be prescribed off-label to treat orthostatic hypotension and other conditions involving low blood pressure.
  • Why are mineralocorticoids important in adrenal insufficiency?
In adrenal insufficiency, the body fails to produce enough aldosterone, a natural mineralocorticoid. Replacing it with medications like Florinef helps prevent dangerous imbalances.
