Dovobet / Daivobet / Dovobet / Taclonex / Xamiol Gel (generic name: calcipotriol and betamethasone) is an antipsoriasis ointment containing two active ingredients: calcipotriol (related to Vitamin D) and betamethasone (a corticosteroid). It is prescribed specifically for plaque-type psoriasis, a condition in which skin cells become overactive, causing raised, rough, reddened areas covered with dry, silvery scales. Calcipotriol helps address the overactive skin cells, while betamethasone alleviates redness, swelling, itching, and skin irritation.

Dosage

A healthcare provider will instruct on the best way to apply the medication. It is typically suggested that the ointment be used once a day, preferably in the evening. When applying the ointment, avoiding getting it on sensitive areas like the face, scalp, mouth, and eyes is important. If the ointment spreads far beyond the affected area, wipe it off with a clean cloth or tissue. To get the best results, it’s advised not to bathe or shower immediately after applying the ointment.

Caution

Treatment with this ointment may lead to increased calcium levels in the blood or urine, often due to excessive use. Signs of increased calcium in the blood include increased urine output, constipation, muscle weakness, confusion, and even coma. This condition is serious, and immediate medical attention is necessary. Once the treatment is discontinued, calcium levels typically return to normal. To prevent adverse effects, it is recommended to not use Dovobet on more than 30% of the body or to exceed 15 grams per day. It contains a potent steroid that should not be applied to specific skin areas prone to damage, such as the groin, armpit, under breasts, or to areas already damaged. Avoid extended exposure of treated areas to sunlight.

Storage

Dovobet ointment should be kept in a cool, dry place below 77°F/25°C. It is advisable to not store it in the refrigerator, as it may become difficult to spread. Avoid keeping Daivobet near a sink, on a window sill, or in the car. The tube of Daivobet ointment should be discarded one year after it is first opened, regardless of the expiry date.
