It treats high prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) and prevents or stops breast milk production. It belongs to a group of medicines called dopamine receptor agonists. Cabergoline helps with high prolactin levels, which can lead to issues like irregular periods, trouble getting pregnant, or problems with erections.

Dosage

The doctor will determine the dosage and treatment plan. The typical doses are as follows:

To prevent milk production after childbirth: 1 mg (two 0.5 mg tablets) on the first day.
To halt milk secretion during breastfeeding: 0.25 mg (half of a Dostinex 0.5 mg tablet) every 12 hours for two days.
To lower prolactin levels in other conditions: 0.5 mg weekly, either as a single dose or split into two doses. The dose can be increased gradually until fully effective (up to 2 mg weekly).

For better tolerance, a doctor may suggest taking Dostinex with or after a meal to minimize feelings of nausea or vomiting. Avoiding alcohol is recommended as it can heighten the risk of dizziness. Do not chew the tablet, but it may be split. When starting the medication, it is advised to sit, stand, or lie down slowly due to possible sudden declines in blood pressure that can cause dizziness.

Caution

Patients need to be checked often for impulse control disorders. Patients and caregivers should know that behavior changes like gambling, increased sex drive, overspending, binge eating, and compulsive eating have been observed in patients taking dopamine agonists like Dostinex. If these symptoms appear, the doctor may slowly reduce the dose or stop the medicine entirely.
