Actos (pioglitazone) is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. Actos is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Common side effects of Actos may include:
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Fluid retention.
  • Leg, arm, back or muscle pain.
  • Headache or muscle aches.
  • Dizziness.
  • Nose and throat irritation.
  • Weight Gain.
  • Diarrhea or gassiness.
Indications for ACTOS:

Adjunct to diet and exercise in type 2 diabetes, as monotherapy or in combination with metformin, insulin, or a sulfonylurea. Limitations of use: not for treating type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

  • What is Actos prescribed for?

Actos (pioglitazone) is a diabetes drug in the group known as thiazolidinediones, which are insulin sensitizers. Actos may be prescribed alone or with other diabetes drugs, along with diet and exercise, to control blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.
  • Can you gain weight with Actos?

Weight gain was observed in clinical studies of Actos and was related to the dose of Actos. Actos is prescribed along with diet and exercise, which will limit weight gain, but regular consultation with a healthcare professional is advised.
  • Should I take Actos morning or night?

Pioglitazone can be taken at any time, morning or evening. It is generally advisable to take it at the same time every day, swallowing the tablet whole with water
  • What is better: metformin or pioglitazone?

Actos and metformin work in different ways, and the appropriate drug will be prescribed based on each patient’s situation. Pioglitazone works by helping the body use available insulin more efficiently. Metformin works to help the body use sugar better, by reducing the absorption of sugars in the stomach, and reducing the release of stored sugar from the liver.
  • How long does it take for Actos to start working?

Pioglitazone can reduce HbA1C levels in the same way as other drugs for diabetes. It may take two to three weeks for blood sugar levels to start to decrease. The full effect may only be realized in two to three months. Usually, blood sugar levels are checked every three months to see that pioglitazone is working
