Viagra is a medication used to treat Erectile Dysfunction (ED) also known as impotence. Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) works by increasing blood flow so that the erection can last longer and be stronger. Sildenafil (Revatio) is also used daily in a lower dose to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Viagra tabs are diamond-shaped & blue with the word Pfizer embossed on one side, and VGR engraved on the other. Viagra is taken once a day between 30 minutes and 4 hours prior to sexual intercourse.

Viagra side effects include dizziness, headache, and stomach upset. Vision changes such as increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or trouble telling blue and green colors apart may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Sexual activity may put extra strain on your heart, especially if you have heart problems. If you have heart problems and experience any of these serious side effects while having sex, stop and get medical help right away: severe dizziness, fainting, chest/jaw/left arm pain, nausea. Rarely, sudden decreased vision in one or both eyes (NAION) may occur. This effect may or may not be caused by sildenafil. If this serious problem occurs, stop taking sildenafil and get medical help right away. You have a slightly greater chance of developing NAION if you have heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, certain other eye problems (“crowded disk”), high blood pressure, if you are over 50, or if you smoke. Rarely, a sudden decrease or loss of hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness, may occur. Stop taking sildenafil and get medical help right away if these effects occur. In the rare event you have a painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 or more hours, stop using this drug and get medical help right away, or permanent problems could occur. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.

Sildenafil increases the effects of blood pressure lowering medications. It also increases the blood pressure lowering effects of nitrates, for example, isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil), isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, Ismo, Monoket), nitroglycerin (Nitro-Dur, Transderm-Nitro) that are used primarily for treating angina. Patients taking nitrates should not receive Sildenafil.

  • How should I take Viagra for best results?
According to the pamphlet that accompanies Viagra, the recommendation is to take the pill either one hour before the intended sex act on an empty stomach, or two hours after eating and up to four hours before sex. This will avoid a delay in its effectiveness. It is also suggested to take Viagra with a glass of water, or with skim milk. A light snack is not contraindicated. Doctors advise keeping in mind that taking a dose with whole milk or heavy food may have an impact on its effectiveness.
  • Can I take 2 Viagra pills at once?
Because 100 mg is the highest dose available, it is generally advised to not double-dose or to take more than one tablet per 24 hours. Sildenafil 100 mg is the highest safe dosage generally allowed. If it is not effective, talk to your healthcare provider because there are other possible treatments for ED.
  • Can you drink on Viagra?
Many people ask what happens if they drink alcohol while taking an ED medication. Alcohol is reported as having the potential to either cause or worsen ED. Therefore, the general advice is that men taking a medication like Viagra in order to help them get or maintain an erection may find that alcohol may be counteracting its effects. In other words, the general opinion is that for anyone taking an ED medication, it's better to limit alcohol consumption or avoid it altogether.
  • How long does Viagra stay in your system?
Tests have shown that Viagra can stay effective in the system for up to twenty hours. As well, it may take days to be fully eliminated.
  • What happens if you use Viagra and don't need it?
There are reports of some people who elected to take Viagra off-label to try enhancing their sexual performance, despite not being diagnosed as having ED. Taking Viagra can have serious side effects. It should only be acquired on a prescription from a healthcare provider
  • Who should not take Viagra?
There are many preconditions that should warn against taking Viagra. The list includes people who have low blood pressure (hypotension), have an eye disease such as retinitis pigmentosa, have serious liver problems, have recently suffered a stroke, have suffered a heart attack, or have any other heart problem. They should discuss the options thoroughly with a doctor. It may be necessary to check whether the heart can withstand any additional strain of having sex or whether there may be side effects that will aggravate the preexisting conditions.
