Vagifem® (estradiol) is a natural form of the hormone estrogen. This medication can be used to treat menopause symptoms and reduce urgency or irritation during urination. It is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication and does not require a prescription.

Vagifem® vaginal suppositories are tablets used to treat symptoms of menopause and may be used in women with or without an intact uterus. Vagifem® is a local vaginal therapy, and for women with an intact uterus, progestogen treatment is not necessary.

For initiation and continuation of treatment of postmenopausal symptoms, the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration should be used.

Recommended initial dose: One vaginal tablet daily for two weeks. Maintenance dose: One vaginal tablet twice a week.

Treatment may be started on any convenient day. If a dose is forgotten, it should be taken as soon as remembered. Double-dosing should be avoided.

  • What to expect when taking Vagifem?
There are some common mild side effects, such as digestive disruptions like nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps; headaches; swelling of the hands or feet; weight gain; breast pain; vaginal itching or discharge; changes in the menstrual period cycle; breakthrough bleeding. If side effects persist or get worse, make sure to talk to a healthcare provider or pharmacist. Allergic reactions like hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat should be referred immediately for emergency medical help.
  • How long does it take for Vagifem to take effect?
Vagifem will start to raise estrogen levels in the body as soon as the medication is taken. It will take two to three months before the full benefits of the treatment are felt.
  • What is the best time of day to insert Vagifem?
Vagifem can be inserted at any time of the day. However, it’s best to stick to a regular routine, with the same time daily. Always consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist with any questions.
  • Do I have to take Vagifem forever?
Vagifem vaginal inserts are symptomatic treatments. Once relief is felt from the vaginal symptoms, a healthcare provider may recommend reducing the frequency of use. However, if the symptoms return, resuming use may be considered on the advice of the treating doctor.
  • How long does it take for Vagifem to dissolve once inserted?
The Vagifem insert normally takes several hours before it is fully dissolved. In some instances, it may not be fully dissolved at the time of the next scheduled insert. In such cases, one may notice that the applicator comes out covered with a sticky substance. This is the previous day’s insert which has touched the applicator.
