Zyprexa is prescribed to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hearing voices, seeing things that do not exist, believing in things that are not true, suspicion and disconnection.
It is also prescribed to treat the symptoms of bipolar I disorder, which include alternating periods of depression and uplifted mood, nervousness, increased activity and restlessness, racing thoughts, rapid speech, changes in
appetite, impulsive behavior, and decreased need for sleep.
Zyprexa treats the symptoms of treatment-resistant depression, which include decreased mood, decreased interest,
increased guilty feelings, decreased energy, decreased concentration, changes in appetite and suicidal thoughts or behavior.
Olanzapine is increasingly used off-label for the treatment of multiple symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, and anorexia in cancer patients and others with serious illnesses.
Zyprexa (which contains the active ingredient olanzapine) can manage symptoms of mental health conditions such as: schizophrenia in which people are seeing, hearing, feeling or believing things that are not rational, are feeling suspicious or having muddled thoughts, feel agitated or are hyperactive, excited or elated. There can also be manic or impulsive symptoms of bipolar disorder.
Atypical antipsychotics work by blocking the D2 dopamine receptors in the brain. They also have noradrenergic, cholinergic, and histaminergic blocking action in which they regulate attention, alertness, and stress responses, reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure, and can also cause drowsiness..
Olanzapine is not addictive but it should not be discontinued suddenly, in order to minimize withdrawal symptoms. A doctor should advise on how to do this safely.
