Onglyza (generic name: saxagliptin) is an oral medication that helps control blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes. It regulates the levels of insulin produced in the body after eating. Onglyza is sometimes used in combination with other diabetes medications. It is not used for treating type 1 diabetes.

Dosage

Adhere to the treatment regimen as recommended by the doctor. Onglyza can be taken with or without food at any time during the day but should be taken at the same time each day.

If too high a dosage is accidentally taken or if a child has accidentally swallowed the tablets, call for emergency aid or go to a hospital emergency room and take the package with you. If a scheduled dose is missed, it can be made up for as soon as remembered, but only on the same day. Do not double dose to make up for missed doses.

upper respiratory tract infection
urinary tract infection
sinusitis
inflamed nose or throat (a cold or sore throat)
headache
muscle pain
gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, inflammation of the stomach (gastritis) or of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis), stomach ache or indigestion.

In very rare cases, Onglyza can cause a serious allergic reaction. Call 911 and get emergency medical help immediately if there are any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Onglyza is used to treat people with type 2 diabetes in cases in which sugar levels are not adequately controlled when using a single anti-diabetic medicine.

Onglyza may be taken along with other diabetes drugs, such as metformin.
