NuvaRing contains the same hormones that are used in most oral birth controls. These hormones restrict release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) so that there cannot be a pregnancy. The hormones also cause the cervical lining to thicken and this blocks sperm from fertilizing any egg that was released.

What are the pros and cons of NuvaRing?

NuvaRing is a very effective method of birth control as long as the user follows the instructions. Some users of the device do become pregnant because they did not follow the exact instructions. The body may need to get used to the hormonal changes on first use, so there may be some initial discomfort.

NuvaRing (etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol) is a contraceptive vaginal ring used to prevent pregnancy. Each ring contains a low dose of two female sex hormones that are slowly released into the blood circulation. Because of the low amounts that are released, NuvaRing is regarded as a low-dose hormonal contraceptive.

Ethinylestradiol and etonogestrel are female contraceptives that, in combination, prevent ovulation. The medication also causes changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder if an egg has been released, both for sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Other less serious side effects may include mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, breast pain, tenderness, or swelling, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, changes in weight or appetite, problems with contact lenses, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in the menstrual periods, decreased sex drive or headache, nervousness, dizziness, feeling tired.
