How long does bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03 take to work?

NOTE: Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% is no longer on the market. It has been replaced by bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.01% (see below). With application according to the specifications from the doctor, the eye pressure should begin to reduce four hours after use and reach full effect after 8 to 12 hours. The reduction in pressure generally lasts for at least a full day.

Why is Lumigan 0.03 discontinued?

According to the press release from Allergan, the manufacturer of Lumigan, the decision to withdraw Lumigan 0.03% was based solely on the preference from prescribers for the 0.01% formulation. There is no FDA-approved generic version of bimatoprost ophthalmic in the 0.01% concentration.

What happens if I use too much Lumigan?

It is advised by ophthalmologists to avoid the overuse of Lumigan. That can in fact make it less effective in achieving lower pressure inside the eye.

Does Lumigan affect the heart?

First-line treatments for glaucoma such as bimatoprost (Lumigan), act something similar to the hormone prostaglandin. However, there are no reports that it affects the heart rate. It may change the color of the iris.

Lumigan (generic name: bimatoprost ophthalmic) reduces pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from the eye. Bimatoprost ophthalmic is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Lumigan RC® contains benzalkonium chloride at a concentration of 0.02% (0.2 mg/mL), compared to 0.005% (0.05 mg/mL) in Lumigan ®.

Common side effects of taking Bimatoprost include itching of the eyes, eye irritation, dry eyes, eye redness, eyelash darkening, and reversible darkening of skin around the eyes. Bimatoprost may also cause permanent brown pigmentation in the colored part of the eye and hair growth in other areas of the body that it comes in contact with.

Bimatoprost should be administered at least five minutes before or after other eye medications. Use of bimatoprost for eyelash growth may increase or decrease the effect of prostaglandin-like drugs used for treating elevated IOP. Bimatoprost solution contains benzalkonium chloride, which may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Contact lenses should be removed prior to application of bimatoprost. Contact lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes following administration of bimatoprost.
