Kayexalate powder is an orally or rectally administered powder indicated for treating high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia).Â
Kayexalate contains the active ingredient polystyrene sulfonate, which binds potassium ions in exchange for sodium ions. This helps decrease the amount of potassium in the blood, thus lowering the chances of heart rhythm changes due to high potassium levels.
This medicine is not absorbed in the body.
If one or more of the following severe side effects are experienced, contact a doctor immediately:
- Allergic reaction that may appear as a rash, trouble with breathing, or swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or neck
- Severe rectal or stomach pain
- Severe constipation or bloating
- Severe nausea and vomiting
- Bloody, black, or tarry stools, vomiting or coughing up blood
Other side effects are listed below and should be reported to a doctor or healthcare provider if experienced:
- Muscle cramp fits and jitteriness
- Change in heart rate, exhaustion, muscle weakness, and confusion
- High blood pressure, swelling of limbs, or problems with heart or kidneys
- Stomach, abdominal, or gut pain
- Loss of appetite
- NauseaÂ
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Coughing or shortness of breathÂ
