Elocon / Elocom (generic name: mometasone furoate) can be prescribed to treat inflammatory skin conditions that respond to topical corticosteroids. Elocom is a topical corticosteroid designed for external use on the skin to help reduce inflammation, redness, itching, and swelling associated with dermatological conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It works by calming overactive inflammatory responses in the skin, which can otherwise lead to persistent discomfort and visible skin changes.

Elocon is available in three different formulations – cream, ointment, and lotion – to suit different skin types, body areas, and clinical needs. While all three forms contain the same active ingredient, the base formulation affects how the medicine spreads, absorbs, and feels on the skin:

• Cream is generally formulated for moist or weeping skin areas
• Ointment has a richer base suited to dry or thickened skin
• Lotion is a lighter preparation intended for hairy or hard-to-reach areas such as the scalp.

Mometasone furoate belongs to the corticosteroid class of medicines. These medicines act within skin cells to reduce the release of substances that cause inflammation and irritation. By limiting these processes locally at the site of application, Elocom helps improve skin comfort and appearance without acting throughout the entire body when used as directed.

Elocom is intended for short-term management of symptoms rather than long-term continuous use. Its different formulations allow treatment to be tailored to the characteristics of the affected skin while maintaining consistent therapeutic action across all forms.

Dosage

It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if there are any doubts regarding the proper dosage and treatment regimen.

Elocom is applied to the affected skin area as a thin layer. The specific formulation prescribed determines how it is applied and how easily it spreads across the skin surface. Only the amount needed to lightly cover the affected area should be used.

General patient-relevant guidance includes:

• Application is usually once daily unless otherwise directed

• The cream and ointment are gently rubbed into the skin until absorbed

• The lotion is applied in small drops and spread lightly, especially on hairy areas

Treatment duration depends on how the skin responds. Use should stop once symptoms improve unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise. If a dose is missed, it should be applied when remembered, provided it is not close to the next scheduled application. Double dosing is not permitted.

Elocom is for external use only. Contact with eyes, mouth, or broken skin should be avoided. Hands should be washed after application unless they are the treated area.

Storage

Elocom should be stored according to the conditions stated on the packaging to maintain product stability and effectiveness. All formulations must be kept out of the reach of children.

Storage guidance includes:

• Store below 25 °C (77 °F)

• Do not freeze

• Keep the container tightly closed when not in use

• Protect from excessive heat and direct light

The cream, ointment, and lotion should not be used after the expiry date printed on the packaging. The expiry date refers to the last day of the stated month. Any unused product remaining after the treatment course should be disposed of safely according to local guidance.
