Relenza begins working shortly after you start treatment by preventing the flu virus from spreading. For best results, you must start taking Relenza within the first 48 hours of your symptoms appearing. While you may not feel better instantly, the medication can help reduce the total duration of your flu symptoms by about one to two days compared to not taking anything. It also helps lessen the severity of symptoms like fever and aches.

If you miss a dose of Relenza, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose (for example, within 2 hours), you should skip the missed dose completely. Then, take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take a double dose of Relenza to make up for the one you missed, as this can increase your risk of side effects.

Relenza is generally not recommended for patients with underlying respiratory diseases like asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Because Relenza is an inhaled powder, it carries a risk of causing severe bronchospasm (sudden airway narrowing) in people with these conditions. You must inform your doctor about your complete medical history, especially any breathing problems, before you start taking this medication. Your doctor can determine if it is safe for you.

Relenza is not a substitute for the annual flu vaccine. The flu shot is the primary method for preventing influenza. Relenza is an antiviral medication used to treat an active flu infection or prevent it after a known exposure. You can still get the flu vaccine while taking Relenza for prevention, but you should speak with your doctor about the timing, especially concerning the live attenuated nasal spray vaccine.

Relenza is not effective for treating the common cold. This medication is specifically designed to target the influenza A and B viruses. The common cold is caused by different types of viruses, such as rhinoviruses, which are not affected by zanamivir. Using Relenza for a cold will not help your symptoms and is not an appropriate use of the drug. Your doctor can confirm if your symptoms are from the flu.

Relenza is administered as a dry powder that you inhale orally using a special plastic device called a Diskhaler. The medication comes in a foil-wrapped Rotadisk that contains four blisters of the powder. You place the disk into the Diskhaler, pierce a blister, and then inhale the powder deeply through the mouthpiece. It is a breath-actuated device, meaning your inhalation draws the medicine out. This method delivers the drug directly to your respiratory system.

Relenza is approved for use in children, but the age limits depend on the reason for use. For treating an active flu infection, Relenza can be prescribed to children who are 7 years of age and older. For preventing the flu after exposure to the virus, it is approved for children 5 years of age and older. It is not recommended for children younger than these ages. Always follow the pediatrician's instructions.

Your Relenza Diskhaler and unopened Rotadisks should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not store them in a bathroom. Keep the Rotadisks in their foil packaging until you are ready to use one. Once a foil-wrapped Rotadisk is opened, you must use all four blisters within one month. Always keep medications out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use past the expiration date.

The most common side effects of Relenza often involve the respiratory tract since it's an inhaled medicine. These may include headache, cough, sore throat, or nasal irritation. Some people might also experience dizziness or nausea. These effects are usually mild and temporary. If any side effect becomes severe or you have trouble breathing, you should contact your doctor immediately. This is especially important for those with a history of breathing problems.

Relenza should only be used during pregnancy if your doctor decides the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as its effects are not fully studied in pregnant women. It is not known if zanamivir passes into breast milk. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, you must discuss the risks and benefits of using Relenza with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.

The standard treatment course for an active flu infection with Relenza lasts for five consecutive days. During this time, the typical dosage is two inhalations taken twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. For flu prevention (prophylaxis) after being exposed to the virus, the course is longer. For prevention, you would typically take two inhalations once per day for ten days. It's crucial to complete the full prescribed course.

Relenza has few known drug interactions because very little of it is absorbed into the bloodstream. However, it is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. You should not receive a live intranasal flu vaccine while taking Relenza or for a short period after. Your doctor or pharmacist can provide guidance on using Relenza safely with your other medications.
