What is Triumeq?

Triumeq is a prescription medication used for the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1). This medicine is a complete regimen in a single, once-a-day tablet. It contains a combination of three different antiretroviral drugs: abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine. Triumeq works by stopping the HIV virus from making copies of itself in your body. This helps to lower the amount of HIV in your blood, which is known as your “viral load.” Lowering the viral load can help your immune system recover and reduce the risk of developing other illnesses associated with HIV.

How does Triumeq work?

Triumeq works by combining the actions of three different drugs to fight HIV in multiple ways. Two of the ingredients, abacavir and lamivudine, are from a class of drugs called Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs). NRTIs work by blocking an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which the HIV virus needs to replicate its genetic material. By blocking this enzyme, they prevent the virus from making new copies of itself. The third ingredient, dolutegravir, belongs to a class of drugs called Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (INSTIs). Dolutegravir blocks another critical enzyme called integrase. The HIV virus uses this enzyme to insert its genetic material into the DNA of your human cells. By blocking integrase, Triumeq prevents the virus from taking over your cells to create more HIV.

Who is Triumeq for?

Triumeq is intended for use by adults and adolescents who are at least 12 years old and weigh at least 40 kilograms (about 88 pounds). It can be prescribed for individuals who are starting HIV-1 treatment for the first time. It may also be suitable for certain patients who are switching from another HIV treatment regimen, but this must be determined by a healthcare provider. A critical factor for taking Triumeq is a genetic screening test. Before anyone can start this medication, they must be tested for a specific gene called HLA-B*5701. People who have this gene are at high risk for a severe allergic reaction to abacavir, one of the components of Triumeq. Therefore, only patients who test negative for this gene can safely take the medication.

Dosage and administration

Triumeq is designed for simplicity with a standard dosage of one tablet taken once per day. This consistency is very important for keeping the virus under control. You can take your dose with or without food, whichever is more convenient for you. However, you should try to take it at the same time each day to maintain a stable level of the medication in your bloodstream. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is already close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. You should never take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one.

Side effects

Triumeq may cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. The most common side effects are often mild and may include difficulty sleeping, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. These might lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. However, Triumeq carries the risk of more serious side effects. The most significant is a serious hypersensitivity (allergic) reaction, linked to the abacavir component. This risk is why genetic testing is required before starting. Other serious risks include the buildup of lactic acid in the blood (lactic acidosis) and severe liver problems. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms like fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
