Elimite cream begins working to kill scabies mites and their eggs immediately after application. The cream must be left on the skin for 8 to 14 hours to be fully effective. While Elimite kills the mites quickly, itching may persist for up to four weeks as your skin sheds the dead mites. This is a normal part of the healing process.

Elimite is designed to be a single-application treatment that is typically curative. Most people only need to apply the cream once to completely eliminate a scabies infestation. However, a doctor may recommend a second application 7 to 14 days later if live mites are still present or new lesions appear, ensuring all mites are eradicated.
