A single Ozurdex implant is designed to last for several months. The medication, dexamethasone, is released slowly over time as the implant biodegrades. The duration of effect can vary from person to person, but many patients experience benefits for up to six months. Your doctor will determine if and when another implant is needed based on the response of your eye and the status of your underlying condition during follow-up exams.

The Ozurdex injection procedure is designed to minimize pain. Your ophthalmologist will use powerful numbing (anesthetic) eye drops before the injection, so you should not feel any sharp pain. Your vision may be blurry immediately after receiving an Ozurdex injection. This is a common and temporary effect. The blurriness can be caused by the dilating drops used during the procedure, the antibiotic ointment applied afterward, or the implant itself moving in the vitreous a bit. This initial blurriness usually clears up within a few hours to a couple of days. Contact your doctor if blurriness persists or worsens.

You should not drive on the day you receive an Ozurdex injection. Your eye will be dilated for the procedure, which makes your vision blurry and sensitive to light. The injection itself can also cause temporary vision changes. It is essential to arrange for someone to drive you home from your appointment. You should be able to resume driving and other normal activities on the following day, or as advised by your doctor.

Ozurdex can cause a temporary or sustained increase in intraocular pressure (IOP), also known as ocular hypertension. This is a common side effect of steroid treatments in the eye. Your doctor will monitor your eye pressure closely before and after the injection. If your pressure increases, your ophthalmologist may prescribe eye drops to lower it and protect your optic nerve from potential damage.

It is also wise to avoid swimming or using hot tubs for a few days to prevent exposure to bacteria. Try to keep soap and water out of the treated eye when you shower. You can usually use other eye drops with Ozurdex, but it is critical to follow your doctor's instructions. Your ophthalmologist will likely prescribe antibiotic eye drops for you to use for a few days after the injection to prevent infection. If you use other drops for conditions like glaucoma or dry eye, inform your doctor. They will tell you how to space them out properly to ensure each medication works effectively.

Signs of a serious problem after an Ozurdex injection require immediate medical attention. These symptoms include a significant decrease in vision, severe or increasing eye pain, new floaters, or seeing flashes of light. These could indicate a complication like a retinal tear, retinal detachment, or a severe infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis). Contact your ophthalmologist right away if you experience any of these symptoms following your procedure.

An Ozurdex implant should not be given to patients who have an active or suspected infection in or around their eye. It is also contraindicated for individuals with advanced glaucoma that is not well-controlled. Patients with a known allergy to the active ingredient, dexamethasone, should not receive it. Furthermore, it's not suitable for those who have a torn posterior lens capsule, as the implant could migrate into the front part of the eye.
