Xofluza (generic name: baloxavir marboxil) is an antiviral medication designed to treat and prevent infection by influenza A and B viruses in individuals aged 12 and older. It is particularly effective for acute uncomplicated influenza, which occurs when symptoms have been present for no more than 48 hours.
Xofluza offers a single-dose treatment regimen, simplifying patient compliance. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the cap-dependent endonuclease enzyme, a key component of the influenza virus’s replication process. This disruption reduces the virus’s ability to multiply within the body, aiding symptom resolution and limiting further spread.
As a member of the polymerase acidic (PA) endonuclease inhibitors class of medications, Xofluza is a targeted therapy that distinguishes itself from other antiviral drugs. It is effective both as a treatment for active infections and as a post-exposure prophylactic to prevent illness in individuals exposed to the flu. However, Xofluza is not a replacement for influenza vaccination, which remains the primary method of flu prevention.
