Rapaflo (silodosin) is a prescription medication for an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder. What is Rapaflo?

Rapaflo is an oral prescription medication containing the active ingredient silodosin. It is primarily used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a common condition in aging men, also known as an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate can press on the urethra. This causes uncomfortable urinary symptoms. Rapaflo helps improve these symptoms without shrinking the prostate itself. It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers. These drugs are a first-line treatment for BPH symptoms.

How does Rapaflo work?

Rapaflo works by selectively relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. These muscles contain specific receptors called alpha-1a adrenergic receptors. Rapaflo blocks these receptors. This allows the muscles to relax. The relaxation of these muscles reduces the pressure on the urethra. This makes it easier for urine to flow from the bladder. The result is an improvement in urinary stream. It also lessens the feelings of urgency and frequency. Its targeted action helps minimize effects on blood pressure compared to some other alpha-blockers.

Who is Rapaflo for?

Rapaflo is specifically designed for adult men who have been diagnosed with BPH. It is intended for patients experiencing bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. These symptoms can include difficulty starting urination and a weak or interrupted stream. They might also feel that their bladder is not completely empty. Discomfort and frequent trips to the bathroom, especially at night, are common. This medication is not for use by women or children. Patients should have a medical evaluation to confirm BPH before starting treatment.

Dosage and administration

Rapaflo is typically taken as one capsule once a day with a meal. Taking the capsule with food can help your body absorb the medication properly. It also reduces the risk of some side effects. You should take your dose at the same time each day. This helps maintain a consistent level of the drug in your body. Always swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, or open it. Your doctor will determine the correct dosage for you based on your medical condition and kidney function.

Side effects

Rapaflo may cause some side effects, though not everyone will experience them. The most common side effect is a decrease in the amount of semen released during sex. This is known as retrograde ejaculation and is harmless. It reverses when the medication is stopped. Other possible side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, and a stuffy nose. A drop in blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension) can also occur. This may cause you to feel dizzy or faint. Inform your doctor if any side effect becomes severe.
