Motegrity is a medication used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. This type of constipation has an unknown cause. Motegrity contains Prucalopride, an active ingredient that is a selective serotonin type 4 (5-HT4) receptor agonist. It works by helping improve the movement of food during digestion from the stomach and intestines through the bowels.  

Motegrity side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain and bloating in the stomach
  • Nausea 
  • Diarrhea 
  • Headache
  • Gas
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness 

One side effect of Motegrity may be unusual changes in behavior and mood that manifest as depression, suicidal thoughts, and thoughts of hurting yourself. If you experience this, stop taking Motegrity immediately and contact the prescribing doctor.

  • Is Motegrity an SSRI?
    Motegrity is not an SSRI. Motegrity contains Prucalopride, a selective serotonin type 4 (5-HT4) receptor agonist.
  • How many days does it take for Motegrity to work?
    Motegrity usually takes up to a day to work. Studies showed that patients experienced a bowel movement after their first dose, while a few only experienced relief of symptoms after a few days of treatment.

    Motegrity is very expensive because it is a brand-name drug, not a generic drug, which tends to be less expensive.
  • How much is a 30-day supply of Motegrity?
