Metoprolol blocks beta receptors that are found in the heart. This reduces the action of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the heart, causing it to beat more slowly and with less force. In turn, this reduces the pressure at which the blood is pumped out of the heart and around the body, which helps to reduce blood pressure. Metoprolol can therefore be used to lower high blood pressure.
Common side effects may include:
  • dizziness, tired feeling;
  • depression, confusion, memory problems;
  • nightmares, trouble sleeping;
  • diarrhea; or.
  • mild itching or rash.
Indications
  • Hypertension.
  • Angina pectoris.
  • Prevention of MI and decreased mortality in patients with recent MI.
  • Management of stable, symptomatic (class II or III) heart failure due to ischemic, hypertensive or cardiomyopathic origin (may be used with ACE inhibitors, diuretics and/or digoxin; Toprol XL only).
