Elidel (generic name: pimecrolimus) is used to reduce skin inflammation caused by the type of eczema called atopic dermatitis. It is usually prescribed for people who have not responded to other eczema medications such as topical steroids, or who are allergic to steroids.  It may also be prescribed to treat the condition known as vitiligo, where areas of the skin lose their natural color as a result of an autoimmune process that destroys the melanin-producing cells. It works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, produced by white blood cells as part of the body’s immune response to allergy or irritation. Cytokines are part of a cascade of events in the skin that results in the irritated area becoming inflamed – red, swollen and itchy. Elidel stops the white blood cells in the skin from producing cytokines and so reduces inflammation. Learn more about dermatitis and eczema here.

Serious side effects from Elidel are rare. However, any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as severe dizziness or trouble with breathing, a rash or itching other than where the cream was applied or swelling of the face, tongue or throat should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Common side effects that should clear up within a few days include mild burning or irritation at the site where the cream was applied. Mild headaches may also occur. If they persist or get worse, report this to your healthcare professional or pharmacist promptly.

Elidel is prescribed to treat the eczema condition known atopic dermatitis, especially when other treatments with steroids have failed or are contraindicated. Atopic dermatitis is an immune reaction to inhaled or ingested substances, and attacks are often accompanied by bouts of asthma and hay fever. Cells in the skin are reacting to a stimulus and causing inflammation.

It is also used to treat the autoimmune condition known as vitiligo, where portions of the skin lose their natural color.

  • What is Elidel cream used for?
Elidel is a topical ointment for treating mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema). Eczema causes inflammation of the skin, resulting in itching and rashes. Elidel is usually prescribed for people who have not responded to or are allergic to topical steroids. It can be used for children from the age of two who do not have a weakened immune system.
  • Is Elidel a steroid cream?
Elidel does not contain corticosteroids. It is a steroid-free medicine that treats inflammation of the skin, causing eczema.
  • How does Elidel work on the skin?
Elidel is an immunosuppressant. It works as a calcineurin inhibitor that blocks a protein needed to activate the immune system. By lowering immune system response, inflammation that causes eczema is reduced.
  • Can Elidel make eczema worse?
Prolonged use of any topical treatment for eczema can lead to side effects, but it is rare for eczema itself to get worse. In such a case, or when the side effects do not ease off quickly, you should talk to your doctor.
  • Should I use Elidel cream in the morning or night?
In most cases, doctors prescribe that Elidel should be applied twice daily, in the morning and at night. Rub the cream gently into the affected area of the skin. Use it for the time necessary to clear the condition, and be sure to consult with your doctor if there are no signs of improvement within a few weeks.
  • How long can I use Elidel cream on my face?
Consult with your doctor if there are no signs of improvement within the expected time frame since continuous use may not be bringing any benefit. Treatment of atopic dermatitis with Elidel can take up to six weeks for adults and three weeks for children.
  • Can you put sunscreen over Elidel?
You can apply sunscreens and moisturizers along with Elidel cream. They should only be applied after Elidel has been fully absorbed into the skin. Don’t swim or shower immediately after applying Elidel; this could wash it off.
