Asacol affects a substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea. Mesalamine is used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis. It is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring.

Asacol (mesalamine) is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis and is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring. Common side effects of Asacol include:

mild nausea,
vomiting,
stomach cramps,
diarrhea,
gas,
fever,
sore throat,
flu-like symptoms,
constipation,
headache,
dizziness,
tired feeling, or
skin rash.

Used as an anti-inflammatory agent for ulcerative colitis; not considered effective for Crohn’s disease.
Also used for ulcerative proctitis (rectal formulations, suppository, and enema only).

  • Is Asacol the same as mesalamine?
    Mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid) is the active ingredient in Asacol. ‘Asacol’ is the name of the medication.
  • What is Asacol used for?
    Asacol is used to treat ulcerative colitis, prevent recurrent episodes, and treat Crohn's disease. It is part of a group of drugs called aminosalicylates, which help lower inflammation in the gut.
  • How long can you take Asacol for?
    Asacol can be taken for up to six weeks. Treatment with Asacol is a short term treatment.
  • Is Asacol safe long term?
    Long-term treatment with Asacol has not yet been studied; therefore, it is not recommended to continue taking Asacol for more than six weeks. The prescribing doctor should provide further information about dosage and duration of treatment with Asacol.
  • Who should not take Asacol?
    Patients who are sensitive (allergic) to the active ingredient or any other ingredients in this medication should not take Asacol. Also, patients with kidney or liver problems and children under the age of two years should not take Asacol. Consult a doctor or healthcare provider before starting Asacol treatment.
